the Conniving Moon

We were given as homework to choose an English artist and one of their work to present for Arts class. We were going to make our own version/interpretation of something of they'd done, and I chose Aubrey Vincent Beardsley and his black ink illustration "the Peacock Skirt".

Since he took inspiration from Japanese woodcraft I figured I'd put even more emphasis on the Asian theme by replacing the complicated peacock theme of the lady in the forefront with a much simpler theme of the Japanese legend of Princess Kaguya of the Moon. I also wanted to get my own style of drawing/painting by making it into manga style, which made it even more Asian.

The completely blank background also refers to how Beardsley's own work. Since he drew and painted in black ink he did not have any color or any kind of complicated or complimenting background.

I also wanted to have this contrast between the two ladies, so I made the one sorta representing Kaguya have a much colder colour scheme while the other woman has a much warmer colour scheme, and while I was sketching her dress I kept thinking Greek togas from some reason, so I kind of tried to make something along those lines. It pretty much failed, but whatevs...

Also. The hair of the woman in the toga:ish thing has the most complicated hair I have ever done. Just a small note.

And I also think that the original sketch is much better than the final product... =_=

Disclaimer:
I do not own the original "the Peacock Skirt".
However, this is my own version.
