Soul Wanderer

“Finally!” I exclaimed and stretched. “My masterpiece is complete!”

I backed a few steps to study my creation. It was a lovely painting that depicted an old castle from the 14th century's Transylvania. A man had come into my shop about seven weeks before, and had asked for a painting that depicted an old Transylvanian castle. I had been working on it for the last seven weeks, and now finally it was finished!

Then I felt something strange. I thought I heard voice, and it seemed to come from the painting. I approached to examine it, but nothing seemed to be wrong with the painting, so I turned to go and call the man to inform him that his painting was finished. That he could come and get it when he had the time.

Then suddenly it felt like someone had grabbed ahold of me and pulled me in. I turned my head and saw hands and arms coming out of the painting! They held me in a steady grip. I was completely terrified.

'What's happening?!' I thought frantically.

I tried to scream, but not a single sound left my throat. Completely bound by the chains of terror I was paralyzed. I couldn't move. The arms pulled harder and harder, eventually they got me, and they pulled me into the painting.

I fell! I fell through the air and saw the ground rapidly getting closer and closer.

'Help! I'm going to die!' I thought terrified.

But just before I reached the ground, I slowed down and like floated instead. I stood up and looked around. I noticed I really was in the one and same painting I had just a moment ago laid the finishing touches on. I didn't know it was so beautiful! Was I really that good? The immense terror that struck me earlier was gone, now I was instead fascinated. I studied my work once again and this time closer.

'I wonder how my painting could come to life and drag me into this...?'

Then it struck me. What if it wasn't just my painting?! What if there even were plants, animal and... I almost dared not think it. Vampires...! What if there were vampires here?!

'But... No... What am I thinking?' I scolded myself. 'Of course there aren't any vampires, everyone knows that!'

But still I couldn't help but sharpen my senses and keep my guard up. I started walking towards the castle. When I approached a village I calmed down a little. But then I remembered my clothes! If this is the 14th century's Transylvania then my clothes wouldn't fit in!

'I gotta get new ones!' I thought.

I looked desperately around for anything that could cover my clothes, but I couldn't see anything. Then I got an idea. I felt in my pockets and sure, there was what I needed. I looked up a couple of adequately sized stones and squeezed out a little paint on each. Then I took a brush and dipped in the color and started painting in the air.

After a while I had painted a set of clothes and a brown wanderer's coat. I put on the clothes and stained myself with a little dirt, and messed up my hair a bit.

'I've always lived a safe life, I don't know how to describe this feeling. It feels like... like... like... I don't know, but I feel excited...?' I thought. I couldn't think of anything else.
I entered the village and took a look around.

'Good thing I got myself a new set of clothes. This really is the 14th century's Transylvania.' I thought to myself.

I looked around and saw that the village was completely empty! Then I collided with a man.

“Oh, do forgive me! I did not have my eyes with me.” I apologized to the man.
“Calm yourself, stranger. Would you like to rest in my home, wanderer?” he asked.
“Yes, please.” I answered.

I was careful and tried to not use our modern language. I followed the man to his home where his wife offered a wonderful dinner. I asked what was wrong in the town. The man and woman looked at me as if I was crazy.

“So you do not know what is happening in this area?” the man asked.
I shook my head in denial.
“There's a vampire ravaging here. He lives in the castle over there and he attacks our village constantly.” the man said and pointed to a hill where a large castle stood.

“Why?” I asked.
“No one knows. We used to live in peace with the vampire, but now suddenly he has started attacking the villagers and feeds off their blood.” the man answered and I shivered.

“I shall be honest. It would be best for you to leave our village. You were lucky you ran into me before the vampire caught wind the of your smell.” the man said.
“I shall take your advise and leave your village. But tell me the name of this horrible vampire.” I said to the man.
“His name is Mihai Tepes.” the man answered.

I thanked them for their hospitality then left their house.

“'Tepes'? Where had I heard the name before?” I asked myself. “At any rate... I have to figure out a way to get home again.” I walked towards the castle, believing that I would find a way to get home there.

After almost and hour of wandering I came to the gate. I went in. the hall was enormous and the darkness in there was compact. I could barely see my hand in front of me. I started making my through the dark hall and tried to see if there was a small glimpse of light that could help me, but saw nothing.

Somehow I managed to make my way to the other side of the hall and opened the door that led to the next room, which were somewhat brighter. I looked around, but no luck here either. I continued through the room and through another door, which led to another room. This room, unlike, bathed in light. It bathed in the light of dozens of dark candle lights, which gave the room a mystic atmosphere. I looked around.

The room was extremely well-decorated. A man came up to me while I studied the room. He put his hand on my shoulder and I jumped out of fear! Then he put his hand over my mouth so that I couldn't scream, even though I wanted to. He placed himself in front of me and smiled at me. I saw his fangs.

They were incredibly beautiful even though they were so dangerous. Even though I knew that I couldn't help but being fascinated by them. I was attracted by them for some weird reason. He removed his hand from my mouth.

“I welcome you to my castle, my dear Daka Silver.” he said to me.
I was surprised to say the least. How did he know my name?!
“I'm going be merciful and kill you swiftly.” he said and smiled slyly, but at the same time warm and friendly.

'K-kill me?!' I thought, frightened. 'Why does he want to kill me?!'

The fear took over again. I didn't wanna die! But he didn't give me time to think any more before he buried his fangs deeply into my neck.

'This is the end... I'm going to die.' Were my last thoughts before I fell again. But this time I fell into an eternal darkness...

~*~*~*~*

When I woke up again I was at a hospital. I was dressed in white patient clothes and was lying in a hospital bed. A nurse came into the sterile and white hospital room.

“Oh, good. You're awake.” she said.
“Where am I?” I asked.
“You're at the Saint Alexandra hospital.” she said. “You fainted in your atelier. You must've overworked yourself. Lucky for you the young man who had ordered a painting from you, came by just then, to see how things went. You've been unconscious for two days.”

'Two days?!' I thought. 'Was this all just a horrible nightmare? Yes, it must've been.'

The nurse left the room and the young man, who had ordered the painting, came in. I thought I saw a strange glimpse in his eyes.

'Oh well! It's probably just concern.' “Uhm... Thank you for taking me to the hospital, mister.” I thanked him and gave him a grateful smile to him to show my gratitude.

“Did you have fun?” he suddenly asked, and I felt my blood turn to ice.
'Huh? What? What does he mean?' I thought. 'It can't possibly...? No, that's impossible!'

He just smiled to me as if though he'd read my thoughts. “I hope you had fun on your Soul Flight.” he said as he smiled that half sly and half warm and friendly smile that I knew oh so well... Just who was he?

“I am Mihai Tepes IV. Nice to meet you, Miss.”

I had plans to make this into a novel or something the like, but I lost my motivation, sort of, and it's been put 'on hold', like most of my old original stories....

Its original title of the short story was 'The Painting', but the title I came up for the entire, longer story was 'Soul Wanderer' so I used that.

Either way, I hope you like this~~
Happy reading~~ ^^
